The Municipality of Petaloudes in Rhodes is an area presenting high contrasts yet all harmoniously coexisting. Environment, development and culture are successfully combined.
On one hand, there are forests and the world's famous Butterflies' Valley, a unique biotope of rare natural beauty, part of the Natura 2000 network.
On the other hand, the hotels in the area of the Municipality of Petaloudes, counting 4.000 beds, contribute to the economy and development of the area.
The Municipality of Petaloudes is a newly founded kapodistrian municipality, second in size among the municipalities of Rhodes, with 12.000 habitats. It includes the following areas: the coastal village Kremasti -county town, known to all Greece for its Pan Hellenic Handicraft Exhibition that is open all year round for 40 years now, the coastal village Paradeisi, located next to Rhodes international airport "Diaghoras," where the Grand Magistro Vilneuv lived, the coastal village Theologos characterized by the organized beaches and the hotel infrastructure, the midland communities: Maritsa, with its traditional taverns, Damaria, the only ancient village dated back to the Dorean era and dedicated to Goddess Demetra, and Pastida where one may experience the life of simple country people and visit the Byzantine monasteries.
In a 5 klm distance southeastern of Theologos (Tholo) lies the world's famous Butterflies' Valley, recognized as an ecosystem of unique natural beauty and is under the auspices of the Natura 2000 network (with site GR 4210006) and is now owned by the municipality.
The municipality, being on top of the homonymous valley, has assumed a great responsibility and a very liable mission for the protection, the viable sustainability and development of the Butterflies' Valley, coming forward with a series of important projects and activities towards these objectives.
The Valley of the Butterflies constitutes one of the most important sights, not only for the municipality alone but also for the whole island of Rhodes, and an attraction for an ongoing number of visitors from all over the world. More than 500.000 people visit the valley.
In the area of the Butterflies' Valley is founded and operates since two years now -with the initiative of the Mayor of etaloudes Municipality, Mr. Michalis Kordinas- the Museum of Natural History of Rhodes. The Museum, which is housed in the renovated Italian buildings of year 1930, allows the visitor to combine the enjoyment of a walk at the beautiful valley with a scientific briefing regarding the flora and fauna of this unique biotope. One may also visit the exhibits specially placed in showcases that reproduce the natural environmental conditions. Another exhibit of special interest is the brooder - show room of butterflies housing live specimens that are reproduced and preserved in a special conservatory at the museum's garden.
The Museum of Natural History operates also as a Center for Environmental Education for all the schools in the country, as students from all Greece go on out-of-the-season-excursions to Rhodes and visit the Butterflies Valley. In other words, the area is of educational interest for all the educational levels and a project for study for the university carriers.
