In the heart of the myth and the tradition
The new Municipality of Tripolis covers the central part of Arcadia and includes over 100 villages and settlements.
Traveling around the municipality is a sightseeing adventure to discover beautiful scenery and pleasant people. One of the most beautiful head-villages in Arcadia, Levidi, and the nearby villages with their traditional architecture and original character gaze the slopes of Mount Mainalon; the wine producing region of Mantineia is home of the exquisite grape variety that produces the prestigious Mantineian wines entitled to use the designation Dénomination d'Origine Contrôlée.
Korythio was a metallurgical center in antiquity as evidenced by the prehistoric furnaces found there; Tegea, the land of plenty, is home to the unique apple variety Tripoleos Pilafa, but also of the Temple of Alea Athena; the land of fantastic scenery and rich history, Falanthos is the homeland of Greek Independence hero Theodoros Kolokotronis; the traditional Arcadian villages of Skiritida are nestled in one of the most beautiful forests in Greece; the villages of Valtetsi were the battleground where the Greek revolutionaries victoriously repelled the Ottoman forces in 1821.
Tripolis, the seat of the municipality, is a lively town barely within two hours of Athens. Combining exemplary growth with tradition, it is very hospitable and cozy, with a “humane” pace and unique color.
Reaching almost 2,000 meters, Mount Mainalon is one of the most mystical mountains in Greece, distinguished for its natural beauty and treasures. Its age-old paths leading from Davia to Piana and Alonitsa, Libovissi, Chrysovitsi and the Forest History Museum take visitors to a journey back in time.
Whether cycle commuters, leisure walkers or long-distance bike tourers, visitors will love using the extensive cycle network of Tripolis running along scenic traffic-free paths, quiet roads and lanes. The local mountain climbing clubs are very active and knowledgeable of the mountain conditions. One of Greece’s nicest ski resorts is in nearby Ostrakina.
Tripolis is full of life year-round and has a rich cultural tradition, a popular stop for traveling theatrical and musical groups on a daily basis. It offers quality theater, inexhaustible music, art shows and cinema. There is always something to do and something to see.
With common denominator the rich Arcadian products, each village and town boasts its own culinary tradition. The Arcadian gastronomy is simple and hearty. The sweets are a “chapter” on their own. Chestnuts, apples, quince, cherries and pears are artfully “married” for a delicious culmination of a scrumptious meal.
Come to the heart of Arcadia and leave behind everything that blocks the human mind. This is exactly the impression that Arcadia will leave you with: that the world is not what it seems to be.
