HALKIDIKI THROUGH THE CENTURIES
The region is rich in history and mythology lost in the centuries. The peninsula was inhabited approximately 700,000 ago, as evidenced by prehistoric-era findings in the Petralona Cave. Neolithic settlements from the 'Copper Period were located in the west and central eninsula.
Halkidiki's most spectacular landscape is Mount Athos, the easternmost finger of the peninsula, also known as the Holy Mountain. Castle-like monasteries, rising over the storm-beaten rocks of Mt. Athos, the spiritual centre of Orthodox Christianity. The first monastic communities were established in Athos in the 9th century. They are a UNESCO monument of international cultural heritage and a real-life museum of Byzantine and post-Byzantine art.
