A lace trimmed shoreline, evergreen hillsides rising steeply to the fir, covered mounts of Zereia and Helmos. Erymanthos lies further along and, deep in the heart of the Peloponnese, beautiful Menalon. Further south, Taygetos, the tallest mountain, and eastwards Parnonas. Long rivers flow through its veins, and fertile plains surrounded by the sea. Large gulfs protected from winds hug the beautiful towns of Nafplion, Gytheion, Kalamata, Sparti.

Large settlements grew in the Peloponnese fairy early. On the hill of Mycenae lay the centre of a culture which spread to the whole of Greece. Sparta was linked with the historic march of the region.
