Kavala, a beautiful city, a journey back into time. Periods of creation and civilisation have touched the city throughout the centuries. In the shadow of the castle, the old city, Panagia as the locals call it, is unique with its narrow alleyways. Human intervention has been minimal, so the neighbourhood has preserved its own individual colour. The House of Mehmet Ali and Imaret are both worth a visit.
Kavala City, Eastern Macedonia-Thrace
The archaeological site at Phillippi offers visitors an opportunity for rich knowledge. St. Paul passed through here. This is where he established the first Christian Church in Europe and baptised the first Christian in Europe, Lydia.
The prefecture of Kavala comprises many settlements, untouched samples of the architecture of yesteryear, bearing the features of the local Macedonian architecture.

On the magnificent Mt. Paggaio, visitors will find an organised ski centre. Four-wheeling forest treks with a 4X4 and walking paths. Stops at deserted settlements, monasteries and the Forest Village for comfortable accommodations, coffee or a meal. The village taverns on Mt. Paggaio serve traditional dishes and "tsipouro", the local fire-water. The mountain slopes are dotted with thriving monasteries, such as the nearly two-thousand-years old Monastery of Ecofinissa.
Loutra ton Eleftheron is very popular, while in Krinides visitors can benefit from the healing properties of the famous "Laspoloutra" (mud baths).

Nature reveals itself at the mountain village of Lekani. Arched bridges, oak forests and four-wheeling with a 4X4. The Nestos River with Stena and the magic of its Delta is at a short distance from there. Accommodation is available at a traditional guesthouse at Kehrocambo and the local cuisine is quite palatable. Get some supplies of the local organic products before you leave, the home-made noodles, dried crushed wheat and "tsipouro" are a must.
At Keramoti travellers can visit the Information Centre for the Nestos Delta and at Nea Karya the Visitors Centre for the Riverside Forest.
Pachis Beach, Thassos Island, Eastern Macedonia-Thrace

Thassos provides a challenge in all seasons of the year. Tens of unique and famous beaches await visitors in the summer boasting an excellent hospitality infrastructure. Nevertheless, the heart of the island exhibits a totally different scene. The verdant Mt. Ypsario reveals itself through its mountain villages, running water, walking paths, mountain climbing, horse-back riding and 4X4 excursions on a jeep, mountain biking and "off road" biking.
This is a good opportunity to visit all the mountain villages, Theologos, Panagia, Potamia, Maries, Kallirahi, Sotiros, Kazaviti, and specifically the ideal ecosystem at Lake Genna up the road from the village of Maries, the Monastery of Arhangelos, the Monastery of Panagoudas at Maries and the Monastery of Aghios Panteleimonas at Kazaviti, the pure roducts of the Thracian land and the local delicacies are definitely worth trying.
Frequent ferry and "flying dolphin" schedules departing from Kavala, Keramoti and Nea Peramo offer a splendid opportunity for escapades in the natural environment of Thassos, the most verdant island in the North Aegean.
