… Finest Greek Tastes …

The cuisine of Karditsa evolved in the same way as the lives of its inhabitants: Even today, it continues to be based on the simplicity of traditional products generously offered by the vast, fertile plain of Karditsa.

Many of these local products, manufactured and processed by various enterprises operating in Karditsa, are highly regarded throughout Greece: famous sausages with leek, wines (Mesenikola red, etc.), various types of cheese (feta, Agrafa gruyère), honey, various pastas (noodles, frumenty, crushed grain), spoon sweets (retzelia, quince, etc.), pies (plastos, batzina, herb pie, rice pie, milk pie, etc).

The Food and Beverages Business Network (one of the few active networks of its type in Greece), with the support of the Chamber, supports and facilitates cooperation and extroversion of businesses in the industry, through joint participation in exhibitions, organizing events and various programs. The Network is a key partner in the interlocal cooperation program “Finest Greek Tastes.”

All regional bodies, and more specifically Municipalities, are highly involved in promotional activities of the culinary tradition, through the support provided to local associations. These activities involve a large number of fetes, festivities and entertainment events organized annually, such as the pie feast in Mascholouri Sofadon, the wine festival in Mesenikola, the chestnut feast in Ellinopyrgos, and many more similar events.

The ambitious project “Finest Greek Tastes,” currently under way, is aimed at promoting the taste of quality local products. The project is being implemented by a team of 20 regional developmental agencies (of Achaia, North Peloponnese, Grevena, Western Macedonia, Imathia, Thessaloniki, Kavala, Karditsa, Kastoria, Larissa, Lemnos, Messinia, Parnon, Pella, Pelion, Pieria, Serres, Fthiotiki, Fokiki, and Chalkidiki). The project has been prepared and is coordinated by the Parnon Developmental Company, and is funded by the LEADER program.

Particular attention is paid to products of protected designation of origin (PDO), protected geographical indication (PGI), and traditional specialities guaranteed (TSG), as well as traditional Greek gastronomy and diet. The project is expected to be especially beneficial for production, the farming and food industries, manufacturing, catering and gastronomy, as well as tourism.

As foreseen in the interlocal project, the promotion of quality Greek cuisine products will offer a modern vision of Greek cuisine, which relies on the use of excellent local products of specific geographical origin, combined with traditional recipes and culinary habits, seen in a modern perspective.

Recognized Greek PDO and PGI products are the axis of the project, aimed at quality upgrading, recognition and integration into modern Greek gastronomy. The products of the Greek soil, anchored in our eating habits and our culinary culture, can be the ambassadors of our particular cultural identity as far as flavor is concerned and contribute to tourism growth.

The efforts made by the Development Agencies participating in the project will be carried on until the establishment of a Network of regions that will then undertake to push on actions aimed at integrating gastronomy into each region's “tourism product.”
