MUNICIPALITY OF TILOS

[Contact info]

…opens a window to Greece of yesteryear…

Tilos, in the southeastern Aegean Sea, is the island of nineteen beaches, twelve mountains with crystal-clear fountains, seven medieval castles, a Byzantine monastery, two hundred churches and chapels, a cave, a live cultural monument, over one hundred of bird species, hundreds of flora species and around five hundred residents. Preserving its traditional character, Tilos opens a window to Greece of yesteryear.

Megalo Horio, built in the steep slopes of Agios Stephanos hill, is the head village of the island. A castle founded by the Knights of Saint John crowns the hill. The Necropolis, the Museum of Tilos, a large number of monasteries and the ruins of the Castle are well worth a visit.

On the eastern side of the island, the port of Livadia is the main arrival point for most visitors. Built in the inlet of a big bay, the village of Livadia offers a view of the Turkish coastal mountains that rise over the blue waters of the Aegean at sunrise when the island fishermen sail off for the day’s catch. The 600-hundred-years-old Castle of Agriosykia crowns the mountain peak rising over Livadia. At the village, the Italian architecture building of the police station – built by the Italians who dominated the island from 1912 to 1948 – comes into stark contrast with the whitewashed cubic houses that spread out on the surrounding hills. Numerous seaside taverns serve traditional food and drink.

Blissfully quiet, Eristos is ideal for those seeking isolation. In the Spring, the bursts of colors of the wild flowers make the nearby valley look like a vibrant canvas painting. Eristos boasts the most beautiful beach of the island, a campers’ paradise in the summer.

The ancient and Byzantine cemetery of Agios Antonios is still found at its original location. The small settlement is popular for its quaint beach, a tiny fishing port and a coast famous for its rocks, restaurants and cafeterias.

The medieval and now completely abandoned village of Mikro Horio is surrounded by stone walls and tiny churches built centuries ago. Age-old trees offer refuge to birds in the Spring. At night, the village hosts the island’s night club, offering fascinating views and high quality services. While in Tilos, don’t forget to visit the Monastery of Agios Pandeleimon, the Monastery of Archangel Mihail (Taxiarchis), the Monastery of Agios Antonios, the medieval Kastello, the 19th-century church of Panagia Politissa and the church of Panagia Theotokissa.
