    Crete is home to a rich variety of flora that contain over a hundred species of wild flowers and herbs, unique to the island. Equally as varied as the flora, the Cretan fauna includes the unique Cretan wild goat, the "agrimi" or "kri-kri", found on the Lefka Ori mountain range, as well as a wide variety of mammals, lizards, snakes and an extensive bird-life.

    The Cretan countryside is full of traces of the civilizations that flourished here. In addition to the Minoan monuments, one can see Hellenistic and Roman ruins, Byzantine churches and monasteries. Venetian castles and garrisons.
    Many traditions are preserved in the villages of Crete, such as the Cretan wedding and baptism, both lasting for days with dancing and eating, drinking, all part of the celebration. Grape-gathering, wine-making and tsikoudia-making are autumn activities, where the grapes are crushed at the village distilleries by the locals who, while waiting their turn to run or jump on the grapes, celebrate the event with more food and wine.
