Alternative Tourism Greece:

Sailing in Greece

Sailing in Greece is part of the country’s centuries-long history, seafaring tradition and thousand islands. The geography, beautiful landscapes, large number of anchorages, fully equipped marinas and mild climate in a land known since antiquity for the navigational skill of its people, make Greece an ideal destination for sailing holidays. Whether you have your own sailboat or choose to rent, you will be happy with the possibilities and services.

Offshore sailing in Greece takes to beautiful island clusters, such as, Cyclades, Ionian Islands, North Aegean Islands, Dodecanese, Sporades, Rhodes, Crete, Corfu, Saronic Gulf Islands, Peloponnese, secluded coves, beaches inaccessible by land and crystal-clear blue waters. Unique landscapes with tens of quaint villages, Venetian castles, protected coves, cosmopolitan towns and endless sandy beaches where you can swim and eat at the local tavernas.

Autonomy is the biggest advantage of sailing in Greece. Cruising sailors can drop anchor at remote stretches of land and swim in secluded, almost “private”, beaches even during peak season. Sailing in Greece, is an exciting sport for men and women of practically all ages and knowing how to swim is the only requirement. Small children should wear lifejackets at all times during sailing. Apart from the sailboat with all its rigging and accessories, sailing does not require any special equipment.

Greece is a sailor’s paradise, with immense coastline, consistent trade winds to fill your sails, clear blue water, year-round sunshine, plenty of safe anchorages and islands close enough to navigate by sight.

No matter how independent a cruise is, the boat and its crew will need food, water and fuel, which are available in practically all Greek island harbors, even where there is no organized marina catering to nautical tourists. Sailing may also require some work on the part of the passengers. Even if you hire a skipper, everyone in your crew will be expected to help along every way they can. Those who plan to assist with the actual sailing should be physically fit and able to do some hard sailing work for several hours if conditions require.

In Greece, with 13,676km (approx. 8,500 miles) of coastline and over 1,400 islands of which 169 are uninhabited, a sailing adventure is one of the most exhilarating experiences of a lifetime. The sailing routes include Cyclades, Ionian Islands, North Aegean Islands, Dodecanese, Sporades, Rhodes, Crete, Corfu, Saronic Gulf Islands, Peloponnese.
